Welcome back to the 2023-2024 school year! We hope you all had a wonderful summer break. We wanted to remind everyone that the first day of school is tomorrow, Thursday, August 17th and it is an early release day for both schools. The elementary school students will begin their classes at 8:20 a.m. and will be released at 1:30 p.m. The high school students start at 8:25 a.m. and will be released at 1:45 p.m. School meals are free to students again this year but please complete the income form in the first day packets. This really helps with our school meal funding. Breakfast will be served at the elementary school in the cafeteria from 8:00 a.m. to 8:20 a.m., middle school students can get brunch from 10:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and brunch will be served at the high school from 10:23 a.m. to 10:31 a.m. Please remember to avoid parking in the bus zone at both school sites. Dear Laytonville Elementary School Parents,
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year. I hope all of you have had a restful and enjoyable summer. We are eagerly anticipating the opening of the school year on August 17, 2023.
Our custodial staff has been working diligently getting the classrooms and grounds ready. The playground and parking lot are completed and the kitchen remodel should also be finished at the start of the school year.
All staff have been working hard to prepare for the start of the year by attending various trainings. They look forward to serving your students at Laytonville Elementary/Middle School. I’d like to welcome Raquel Thomson to our elementary teaching staff. Administration is working on staffing for classes and class lists. The class lists will be posted Wednesday, August 16th.
Last year the staff began training in a social emotional program called RULER. RULER is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning that supports school communities in: Understanding the value of emotions, building the skills of emotional intelligence and creating and maintaining positive school climates. This year teachers will teach the RULER curriculum in their classrooms. This program is brought to us through the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. 2023 Freshman Academy kicked off today with three sessions including orientation, PE/sports, and Public Safety. Public Safety students learned some new knots in their session today. This program is open to incoming 9th graders at LHS and runs from 9-12 M/T/W/Th and culminates in a Cal Poly Humboldt field trip on Friday. Students can earn their first two credits of their High School career.
The rest of the week students will work with our Art, Welding, Building Trades, English, Culinary Arts, and Computer Teachers and hear from Mendocino College and our student panel. Come out and join us
On June 1, Laytonville Unified graduated five students from the English Language Development program. These students have shown through their hard work that in addition to their rich family linguistic and cultural heritage, they are able to excel in the classroom with their English speaking peers. The Laytonville High School Lady Warriors will face off against the Los Molinos Bulldogs in Round 1 of the the Division 5 Northern California Softball Championships this Tuesday May 30 on the Laytonville Middle School Field @ 4pm. Tickets can be purchased through gofan.com or by following this link

Congratulations to the Lady Warriors Softball Team for winning the North Coast Section Division 6 Championship. The Lady Warriors defeated California School for the Deaf in a 14-13 nail biter. Now the Lady Warriors will move on to the Northern California State Championships. The brackets will come out on Sunday and they will play on Tuesday.
LUSD is looking for teachers for it's summer program! We plan to hold the program from June 20th to August 2nd if we can fully staff our school. A CA Teaching Credential or Emergency Permit is required. If you are interested in working for us, please contact the LUSD District Office for more information.
Laytonville High School will host our annual student Student Showcase this Thursday, May 25th from 1:00 to 3:30. We will see exhibits from Welding, Fire Department, Public Safety, Spanish, to Graphic Arts, and Building Trades. Culinary Arts will be selling delightful meals and offering cake judging tickets or just get a drink or snack from other fundraisers. Come by and enjoy the giant bed swing, the epic visiting climbing wall, enjoy the high school rock band performance, witness the yearbook dedication, or maybe engage in a water balloon fight at the end of the day. Parents and community are welcome to come on by and check out all of the great happenings.
Congratulations Lady Warriors! On Saturday, May 20th, the Lady Warriors Softball Team defeated Valley Christian 25-1 in the North Coast Section Semi-finals. They will now move on to play California School for the Deaf in Fremont this Wednesday at 5pm. Good Luck and Go Warriors!
May 18th, 2023: Laytonville Schools Celebrated Native American Day today. Students were able to lean about Native Foods, Soap Root Brush Making, Hand Games, Cahto Language, Beading, Jewelry Making, and Traditional Basket Making. Middle School Students participated in a clinic to learn the Native Stick Games and the whole school district came out to eat Indian Tacos see the Round Valley and Cahto Dancers. Thank you everyone for a great day.

LUSD invites the community to come out at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, 5/18/2023, to watch dancers performing for our Native American Day celebration. This event will take place on the field by the Garden Room at Laytonville Elementary School!

Happy Mother's Day from Laytonville Unified School District!
Laytonville High's Culinary 2 class went down to Mendocino College to help prep lunch for 350 people for the College's 50th Anniversary Gala this weekend. They washed 35 lbs. of lettuce, shredded carrots, made vinaigrette, BBQ sauce and chimichurri, roasted a mountain of asparagus and cooked quinoa. Thank you to Chef Petti for this opportunity to get experience working in a commercial kitchen!

On Friday, LHS hosted a special cinco de mayo lunch celebration for our students prepared by our wonderful Latino families and served by their kids. Special thanks goes to Marcos and Erica Santacruz for donating and preparing the mouthwatering carnitas, and to Emilia Alcazar, Haide Sanchez, Patricia Torres, Angela Saldaña, Teresa Guillen, Bessy Portillo, and Sara García for providing rice, beans, salsa, cokes and aguas frescas. Everyone agreed it was a great event filled with food, friends, culture and fun!

Today Laytonville High School hosted our very first career fair. It was a great opportunity for our students and the 8th grade class to talk to career representatives from all around our county. After the event students and presenters were provided a free BBQ lunch with a side pasta salad made by our culinary arts department. We would like to give a special thank you to our staff and parent volunteers who made this day possible.
